Muslims fast during the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, because it is the 4th pillar of Islam and because it is a command from Allah. It is a month to work on getting closer to Allah, get more rewards for doing good deeds, read Qur'an more, try to change our lives, ask Allah to forgive us of our sins of the past year, and to remember the poor people who don't get anything to eat for days or weeks at a time. We fast from sun up to sun down, beginning the day with "suhoor" which is the meal before dawn. We don't eat or drink anything again until "iftar", the evening meal. As Muslims, we are encouraged strongly to follow the ways of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) used to break his fast with dates and water.
There known benefits to fasting [however, Muslims don't use Ramadan to lose weight]. Fasting clearly improves motivation and creative energy; it also enhances health and vitality and lets many of the body's systems rest. It promotes relaxation and revitalization of the body, mind and emotions, and supports a greater spiritual awareness. Physiologically, refraining from eating minimizes the work done by the digestive organs, including the stomach, intestines, pancreas, gallbladder, and liver. Most important our liver, which is our body's metabolic factory, can spend more time cleaning up and creating its many new substances for our use. Breakdown of stored or circulating chemicals is the basic process of detoxification. The bloody and lymph also have the opportunity to be cleansed of toxins as all the eliminative functions are enhanced with fasting. Each cell has the opportunity to catch up on its work; with fewer new demands, it can repair itself and dump its wastes. Fasting increases the process of elimination and the release of toxins from the colon, kidneys, bladder, lungs, sinuses, and skin.
We end the month with a three day holiday called Eid Al Fitr when we gather with friends, family, and neighbors in celebration.
Friday 6pm: (Sorry guys, this one gets a little personal) pears, spinach, and prunes. The name of this recipe is “way to go” and I made it because I haven’t pooped in few days, even though I’ve also been taking psyllium seed, a natural colon cleanser, to help the detox process. I feel like something should have happened by now, so hopefully this juice works. The recipe calls for pitted prunes, but I’ve never seen prunes that weren’t dried, so I cheated and used bottled prune juice. I juiced the pears in the manual juicer too so I didn’t have to clean both juicers (I guess I’m already getting lazy). It worked pretty good, just had to cut the pears into pretty small prices first.
